| XLANDER! |
Colin Butcher has graced us with a OpenVMS version of the XLander game. Can you pilot your lunar lander to a safe landing on the moon?
VAX and Alpha binaries are included. If there is enough interest, we might be able to convince him to work on Integrity binaries, too!

| Tru64 Unix Advanced File System now Open Source |
Okay, not really an OpenVMS thing, but from us folks that have been playing with Digital Equipment products for a few years, this is pretty cool.
The Tru64 Unix Advanced File System (AdvFS) has been released as Open Source. This means anyone can download the source code for it, and it will probably start showing up in various Unix deployments.
If you want to take a look, check out the site web page at Source Forge. |

| New Photos! |
| Hobbyist m2-guy has graced the OpenVMS Hobbyist site with a variety of photos in the VAX Hardware and Digital Equipment.albums. Some good board-level pictures of some of the rock-solid, built-to-last Digital Equipment technology. It all probably still works, too... Thanks! |

| 2007 OpenVMS.org Readers' Choice Awards |
We (Ken, Ian & Marty) here at OpenVMS.org had decided to do a trial run for a "2007 Readers' Choice Awards". The idea has been discussed over the years but for one reason or another it never fully developed. We'll, we're going to give the idea a test run for the Bootcamp this year. If we get good feedback and participation from the community we'll do the awards annually.
Submit Candidates: Monday, May12th to Friday, May 16th at midnight.
Voting Begins: Saturday, May 17th to Wednesday, May 21st at midnight.
Winners announced: Thursday, May 22nd at the Bootcamp Awards dinner.

| New emulator available |
Go and see the emulator of AlphaServer ES40 on http://sourceforge.net/projects/es40/
From the SourceForge Project Page:
I've made a new cvs snapshot available on the download page.
20080318_1530 has the following changes from release 0.18:
- Fixed some IDE CD-ROM issues that were introduced with the
multi-threading patch. (17-mar-2008, Brian Wheeler)
- Restored SDL functionality. (16-mar-2008, Camiel
Vanderhoeven)
- Better exception handling, restored Serial port menu
functionality (14-mar-2008, Camiel Vanderhoeven)
- Ability to stop and restart threads, restored save/restore
state functionality. (13-mar-2008, Camiel Vanderhoeven)
- Use separate threads for devices rather than crowding
everything into one thread. Use Poco libraries for platform
independent threading. NOTE: This patch breaks some
functionality that we will need to regain in the future.
(05-mar-2008, Camiel Vanderhoeven)

| Updated Web Forums |
I've migrated all the web-based discussion forums from phpBB2 to the PHP-Fusion forums. Since most of the site is now using PHP-Fusion, it was going to be confusing to have two different login ID's to use the site.
All the forums and posts from the old phpBB system are there, and I've migrated everyones accounts from phpBB into the PHP-Fusion based site. Just log into the panel at the right, and you should be able to read and access the forums like you always have.
If there are any issues I haven't gotten fixed right, please let me know so I can get it addressed. Thanks! |

| Updated Web Site! |
Welcome to the updated OpenVMS Hobbyist Web Portal. The previous portal was done with a bunch of individual web pages, and was not really very easy to manage. The updated site is based on the PHP-Fusion Content Management System (CMS). This CMS is written in PHP and Apache, and uses MySQL for the database. Since these are easily available on OpenVMS, it was a good fit! This should provide for a more interactive site where Hobbyists such as yourself can participate in the content more.
Why did I choose PHP-Fusion as the CMS? What about Drupal, Joomla, or Wordpress? I needed a CMS that would be easy to manage, easy to migrate to, and worked pretty much out of the box. And for performance reasons, I wanted something that was relatively light-weight.
Drupal wanted some features of PHP that were not compiled into the CSWS_PHP kits. Joomla worked fine, but was a little too heavy-weight and the performance wasn't as good. Wordpress was fine, but is more geared for blogging. PHP-Fusion seemed to be the best fit.
I'm still adding links and such to the site, so stay tuned! |
